Points are conditional units awarded to customers according to predefined rules. Usually a number of points depends on orders made by clients. However, the system for awarding points can be configured flexibly. Using sales rules the user can track client's points and calculate the amount of discounts accordingly.

Limitations can be set on time periods during which points can be earned and spent. This would allow, for example, a policy whereby cumulative points earned in the course of one month to be spent only from the 5th day of the following month, and to be available to spend for up to a maximum of 12 months, after which they will be lost.

Different types of points can be used. A point type defines a points-based discount programme.

Point types are stored and managed in the Point types directory.

Points are usually registered to a client account when orders are paid for. Then the corresponding point-awarding operation is performed. Points are usually registered to a client account linked to an ID (guest card, etc.).

In Tillypad XL there are cumulative and non-cumulative points. Cumulative points are awarded to a client account and accumulate with every visit. Points earned can be used to pay for orders during subsequent visits, in which case they are deducted from the account. Non-cumulative points can only be used during a single visit. Then they are void.

A loyalty system based on cumulative points works well in restaurant chains, where points earned in one restaurant can be spent in any other restaurant in the chain. This type of programme can be extended by including partners, e.g. a group of unrelated establishments (for example a restaurant chain, tour agency, beauty salon etc.) agree to award points to their customers when they make purchases. Points earned by the customer will then be honoured by any other organisation participating in the loyalty card scheme.
